Reflection on TIFFs 2005-2010, Part 1

26 August 2011 No Comment

This year it did not take very long (under 2 hours) to put together my tentative schedule for the festival. As it stands, I’ll probably be seeing about 15 Movies. With a good mix of 1 and 2-film days and only a single 3-film day (Midnight Madness, gets me every time.) As I await the Draw Day to see which of the tickets in my Advance Order I’ve gotten, I thought I’d reflect on some of my favourite films of the last half-decade, in a two-part series.

Of the films I’ve seen in attendence at TIFF, these are tops:

2005 BEOWULF & GRENDEL

Not so much my “Favorite Movie” of this year, as it was the “Only” movie I saw this year. It’s the reason I was introduced to the Film Festival, and it remains one of the most memorable experiences for me. That of course may be due, in part, by meeting Gerard Butler, the star of the movie, the day before the premiere. It helped.

2006 SEVERENCE

While I almost said Alatriste, because it was the first of many movies I’ve seen while in the same room as Viggo Mortensen, I clearly remember there being a giant-headed man sitting directly in front of me during it, thereby making the subtitles unreadable. Also, I may have fallen asleep for a bit.

Severance however, literally had me (and my #1 Best TIFF Friend Ahli) HOWLING with laughter. If you’re a Shaun of the Dead fan, please, please go pick up this British Horror-Comedy, I’m hoping the genre will survive.

2007 ATONEMENT

Lots of really, really great films came to the festival in 2007, including No Country for Old Men, Juno, Eastern Promises (my 2nd TIFF Viggo Film), and Elizabeth 2: Electric Boogaloo. But none quite captured my fancy as much as Atonement (also, I didn’t see Juno or NCfOM at the fest). I got to see James McAvoy before he got all crazy-famous. Additionally this was the first time Ahli & I got to enjoy the Visa Premium Lounge at Elgin. Great Memories.

That’s it for now. Sometime next week I’ll update the 2006-2010 section, until then I have a very busy weekend!
