Reflections of TIFFs 2005-2010, part 2

29 August 2011 One Comment

So, my Advance Order Book has been submitted, and now I wait with baited breath that box 15 (or something close, before) is pulled tonight to ensure that I get most of my festival picks this year. I’ll have to head in to the Box Office at 6am on Friday to pickup and make any changes to my schedule as required. Single tickets go onsale Saturday, September 3rd, and my annual war with MaxWeb shall commence. AKA: The worst online ticking system known to man.

In the meantime, I shall continue, and complete my rundown of my favorite TIFF films of the last six years, continuing with:

Although I did some some great Danish (Flame and Citron & Fear Me Not) films at the fest this year, it was my Year of Viggo. Actually, nearly every year includes him (excluding 2010), but Appaloosa was the finest of the flicks I saw. Including a very sour-faced, but lovely Renee Zellwegger. Viggo is at his best with Large Hats and Moustaches (from Alatriste, 2006). It was a decent and very well acted western, starring and directed by Viggo’s 2nd Best Friend (after David Chronenberg) Ed Harris.

2009 COCO & IGOR

What can I say, I’m a sucker for Mads Mikkelsen. An absolutely wonderful drama and love story, certainly a film that simply did not get as much praise as it should have. I could have said my favorite of this year was The Road, but I think I’ve done enough Viggo worship, and it was great – as a blockbuster. It’s more likely you’ll not have seen Coco & Igor, the best way to describe would be a more dramatic, sexier french version of The End of the Affair. Check it out.

2010 WOMB

This was the first year that I devoted myself to every single day of the festival. I bought tickets to 23 movies in 10 days (but only ended up seeing 16 movies in 9 days). Hands-down my best year at the festival. Choosing a favorite was very difficult. I could have easily said Never Let Me Go, or In a Better World (the 2010 Oscar Winner for Foreign Film). I’m also very lucky to have seen Black Swan and The King’s Speech at this year’s fest (both Oscar winners as well, Best Actress/Best Film).

But Womb stuck with me. This very quiet, controversial film is extremely touching, and very dramatic. The pace is slow, and the landscape stark, but it moved me, and sucked me right into the emotional core. I genuinely hope that Eva Green knows what a phenomenal performance she gave, and gets credit for it often. I will do my small part by recommending this film to everyone who’s a lover of real cinema. I think it’s brilliant.

So that’s my list for 2006-2010. This year is a whole new ball game – and I can’t wait to find out what films I’ll be seeing.
